Artist Statement
I practice art across a range of mediums, but often circle back to textiles. My art takes a more meditative approach to a theme when using textiles to layer meaning and process to express the ideas that emerge from the enquiry. More traditional media are used to explore response, mainly drawing and occasionally painting.
Currently my work is focusing on how we perceive Place. Place is a concept of permanence, a mark on a map. However, it is changed by its inhabitants, and altered by indifference, greed, conflict or population. Yet its tangible, fought for mourned and viewed fondly from afar.
I like to spend time in a Place, respond to the light, the location, the stories and the wildlife. I am particularly attracted to the birds, as they often keep me company when I am drawing en plein air.
I am working in woven tapestry, cloth collage and mixed media to respond to these themes. En plein air charcoal drawings and journaling, and studio studies of tone further inform these themes, with my work often following along seam lines of series.
